Dear all,

We have recently started the 2-month countdown to the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia on May 17th !! We have heard of quite a few projects already and this year promises to be very exciting again all over the world.

I wanted to use this opportunity to send you all some information about our international initiatives, in order to give you all the necessary background information for you to join in, if you wish (and as we hope !)

In order not to be too long and/or confusing, I will send you information on each initiative in a separate email, all the more as each project might interest different organisations or different people within each organisation and this will make circulation more fluid.

You will find on our website a detailed presentation of the campaign. To put it in a nutshell, the idea of this campaign is to oppose religious extremist voices by promoting moderate and progressive positions.

In order to help the expression of these progressive positions, the campaign proposes two main activities :

1) The endorsement of an International Appeal to Religions

2) The organisation of national level dialogues on this issue, including progressive religious voices (to be followed in 2011 by a Dialogue at international level)

The International Appeal was developed by a range of organizations working on the issue of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity, including the Metropolitan Community Church, the European Forum of LGBT Christians, Imaan, the Unitarian Universalist Church, the World Congress of LGBT Jews, the International Federation of Human Rights, Lesbian and Gay Christian Movement etc…(with special thanks to Mario from Drachma/Malta !).

The Appeal is available in English, French, Spanish, Chinese, Russian, German, Arabic, Italian and Portuguese. We invite your organisation to endorse it and, as the aim is to promote the expression of progressive voices, to circulate it for endorsement to moderate religious leaders, partner civil society organisations, political parties, trade unions, intellectuals, artists, etc…

We hope that the collection of these voices will also constitute a powerful advocacy tool at your national or regional level.

At international level, we will be closing the list of “first signatories” on May 12th, so please endorse it before that day and keep us informed of all the signatures that you may have been able to collect. Please make sure the initiative stays embargoed with the media untill we can announce the list of signatories on May 17th. We will of course get the information to you beforehand so you can prepare your communication and PR.

As for the national level Dialogues, we had news that activities with this focus would take place in Uganda, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Turkey, the Netherlands, Russia, Belarus, France, the UK, etc…. We envisage creating an operational network of organizers of such activities to promote learning and we would be very happy to welcome your organisation if you feel you can be interested in organizing something similar, even at quite short notice. And of course, you know that we are always keen to hear about your own initiatives for the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia, whatever they are. The diversity of action is one of the Day’s best assets and most compelling element of its success !!

Ps : I'm sending this message while I'm still in Surabaya, Indonesia. I came to participate in the regional ILGA meeting, that was cancelled under threats of extremist groups. We were all confined for long hours in our hotel rooms, facing the violent mob that had circled the hotel. We had to be evacuated under police escort. This campaign never seemed timelier to me !

Queridos compañeros y compañeras,

¡¡Acabamos de comenzar la cuenta atrás de los dos meses previos al Día Internacional contra la Homofobia y la Transfobia!! Ya hemos oído hablar de unos cuantos proyectos y este año promete ser muy prometedor también alrededor del mundo.

Quería usar esta oportunidad para enviarles a todos ustedes algo de información sobre nuestras iniciativas internacionales, con el objetivo de darles la información de base necesaria para que se unan a nosotros, si quieren (¡y así lo deseamos!).

Para no alargarme demasiado y/o resultar confuso, les enviaré información sobre cada iniciativa en un e-mail separado, sobre todo porque cada proyecto podría interesar diferentes organizaciones o diferentes personas dentro de cada organización, y esto hará la circulación más fluida.

El primer proyecto internacional concierne nuestra campaña sobre “Religiones, Homofobia, Transfobia”. Encontrarán sobre nuestro sitio un documento mas detallado sobre el proyecto.

En pocas palabras, la idea de esta campaña es oponerse a las voces de los extremistas religiosos mediante la promoción de posiciones moderadas y progresistas. Para ayudar a la expresión de estas expresiones progresistas, la campaña propone dos actividades principales:

1) La aprobación de un Llamamiento Internacional sobre la religión.

2) La organización de niveles nacionales de diálogo sobre este asunto, incluyendo a las voces religiosas progresistas (que será seguida en 2011 por un Diálogo internacional

El Llamamiento Internacional ha sido desarrollado por un espectro de asociaciones que trabajan en el tema de la Orientación Sexual y la Identidad de Género, incluyendo la Iglesia de la Comunidad Metropolitana, el Foro Europeo de Cristianos LGTB, Imaam, la Iglesia Unitaria Universalista, el Congreso Mundial de Judíos LGTB, la Federación Internacional de Derechos Humanos, el Movimiento Cristiano Gay y Lesbiano, etc

Les invitamos a considerar su aprobación, y su distribución tanto como puedan. La fecha límite para firmar es el 12 de Mayo. Como siempre, les pedimos de esperar los resultados finales de la campana antes de comunicar el llamamiento a los medios, para que tengamos más impacto.

En cuanto a los niveles nacionales de diálogo, tenemos noticias de actividades con este objetivo tendrán lugar en Uganda, Camerún, Costa de Marfil, Turquía, Países Bajos, Rusia, Bielorrusia, Francia, Reino Unido, etc. Pretendemos crear una red operativa de organizadores de tales actividades para promover el aprendizaje, y estaríamos muy felices de recibir su organización si sienten que pueden estar interesados en organizar algo similar, incluso a pequeña escala. Nous venons de commencer notre compte à rebours des deux mois avant la Journée Internationale contre l'Homophobie et la Transphobie du 17 Mai. Nous commençons à entendre parler d’initiatives qui se préparent à travers le monde et une fois de plus la Journée présage d’être un moment exceptionnel de mobilisation !

Nous voulions saisir l’opportunité de ce moment pour vous informer de certaines initiatives internationales que le Comité IDAHO, l’organisation qui promeut la Journée au niveau international, a développé et auxquelles nous vous invitons à vous joindre.

Pour ne pas être trop long, nous nous limiterons dans ce mail ci à vous faire part de notre campagne sur le thème « Religions, homophobie, transphobie »

Vous trouverez une présentation détaillée sur notre site. En deux mots, il s’agit de s’opposer aux radicalismes religieux en favorisant l’émergence et la diffusion de voix religieuses modérées, qui s’opposent à l’Homophobie et à la Transphobie au nom des croyances religieuses.

Pour favoriser cette émergence et cette diffusion, nous avons développé un Appel International aux Religions, en partenariat avec des associations et mouvements travaillant sur cette question, et notamment la Metropolitan Community Church, le Forum Européen des Chrétiens LGBT, L’association Unitaire Universaliste des Congrégations, le Congrès Mondial des LGBT Juifs, la Fédération Internationale des Droits de l’Homme, le Lesbian and Gay Christian Movement, ainsi que des associations nationales de croyants Chrétiens, Juifs ou Musulmans….

Vous trouverez l’appel sur notre site www.idahomophobia.org en français, anglais, espagnol, russe, chinois, allemand, arabe, portugais et italien.

Nous vous invitons bien sur à le signer, de préférence sur notre site www.idahomophobia.org et, comme il s’agit de promouvoir les voix modérées, de le diffuser auprès des dirigeants religieux modérés, des intellectuels, artistes, partenaires de la société civile, politiques, etc… pour signature.

Nous espérons que cette initiative contribuera de ce fait aussi à vos stratégies au niveau national.

La clôture des signatures aura lieu le 12 mai. Nous vous remercions de bien veiller à l’embargo de l’Appel auprès des média avant que nous n’ayons les résultats consolidés des signatures.

Par ailleurs, nous attirons aussi votre attention sur le fait que dans plusieurs pays, des associations ont entrepris d’organiser autour du 17 mai des moments de dialogue national sur cette question. Des initiatives auront lieu en Ouganda, au Cameroun, en Cote d’Ivoire, en Turquie, aux Pays Bas, en Russie, en Biélorussie, au Royaume-Uni, aux Etats-Unis, en France, etc…

Nous avons créé un groupe de travail international pour échanger sur nos différentes méthodologies et approches et nous vous invitons cordialement à le rejoindre en signalant votre intérêt à jbedos@idahomophobia.org (la langue de travail est l’anglais, comme vous pouvez vous en douter…), si vous souhaitez vous aussi organiser une initiative similaire, même dans des délais relativement courts, puisqu’il nous reste deux mois.

L’année prochaine, pour IDAHO 2011, nous prévoyons l’organisation d’un Dialogue au niveau international.

Et, pour terminer, nous rappelons que nous sommes bien entendus aussi intéressés par les autres activités que vous auriez prévues de votre coté pour le 17 mai, afin que nous puissions faire connaître la diversité et l’étendue de la mobilisation au niveau mondial.
